If you want to see a prelude to November, look no further than the special election in PA-12. Democrat John Murtha held that seat for decades. Now it’s wide open and has the attention of both parties.
The Fix: While the special elections in Pennsylvania’s 12th district and Hawaii’s 1st district — set for May 18 and May 22, respectively — are both important markers in the race for control of the House this fall, the Keystone State race to replace the late Rep. John Murtha (D) matters more when it comes to analyzing the overall political environment.
Why? For three major reasons.
First, the Pennsylvania district is just the sort of culturally conservative area that House Democrats will have to defend in November in race across the country.
It was the only district that went for Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) in the 2004 election then flipped to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) four years later.
And, Republicans have featured both President Barack Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) in their ads in the 12th, a precursor to their November strategy in swing districts — particularly if Burns wins.
Second, the issues on which the race is likely to be decided are entirely national in scope.
I know, that’s only two reasons. You’ll have to read the whole thing for the rest, but let’s just say this is a big deal. I’m sure Joe Biden would throw an expletive in there somewhere. People are starting to understand that the only way to get back to “all politics is local” is to get back to a limited federal government. And we aren’t going to do that by leaving the Democrats in charge.
Stacy McCain reminds the Tea Party people that if they want to make a difference, this is the campaign to get involved in, and quick. The clock is ticking.
So there you have it. If Tea Party people want to make a difference — to help write those “Democrat disaster” headlines Cilizza is worried about — then it’s time to visit TimBurnsForCongress.com, or e-mail the campaign or call 814-619-3414.
I know, we’re all busy. And a lot of wallets are stretched a little thin, but we need to stop the fundamental transformation of America in its tracks. This isn’t the time to sit things out.

Consider it done…..just mailed off checks to both Burns and Charles Djou in Hawaii’s 1st district. I knew about Burns from here and elsewhere on the blogosphere as well as talk radio.
I actually talked to somebody at my congressman’s office (one of the few incumbents I wouldn’t mind seeing stay put) this week. They considered their district reasonably ‘safe’ and started telling me about both Burns and Djou, saying those races were much more competitive and only a few weeks away.
FWIW, here’s Djou’s page: http://www.djou.com/
