Gabrielle Giffords to Run for Jon Kyle’s Senate Seat?

US Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ) announced today that he will not seek another term. Sources close to Rep. Gabrielle Giffords are floating the idea of Giffords running for Kyle’s seat in 2012. They say that prior to the shooting she was planning to run if Kyl retired.

It’s not clear whether Giffords remains interested in running or if she could, physically, meet the demands of a statewide campaign.

But, Giffords’ previously expressed interest in the contest coupled with her rapid recovery from the shooting creates at least the possibility that she could make the race, according to her allies.

Assuming she could run, Giffords would be a formidable candidate not solely due to her hero status in the state — and the nation — but also because of her previously demonstrated fundraising capacity and skills on the stump.

What remains to be seen is whether the idea of a Giffords’ candidacy effectively freezes the Democratic field as people wait to see what she might do — allowing her time to recover and fully consider the possibility of a bid.

Is it just me or is this a bit distasteful? She’s in a rehab facility recovering from a gunshot wound to the head. Can’t people just let the woman rest and recover?

It’s not a “bit distasteful” it’s a lot distasteful, LC. We don’t even know the status of the poor woman after she recovers from hospitalization. If anyone thinks that her near fatal wounds from the hands of that evil coward won’t be life changing, they are wrong.
She may possibly not have the capacity for responsibilities she has already. Focus and pray for her to heal and recover to as normal as possible life. I’ll wait for her own words on her political career.

The Dems respond with: Can’t let misfortune go to waste now can we?

    I don’t mean any disrespect, I really don’t.

but is it possible for a pol to rest, if there is a challenge to meet?

I would say that IF she decides to run, her only competition would come from jan Brewer is she decides to run for the seat herself. If Mrs. Giffords is able to run and the GOP has a lackluster opponent, then Giffords would be a shoo-in.

And yes, it is distasteful that people on the DEM side are already pushing her name to the forefront before we even know if she’s going to be able to continue her current duties as the congresswoman representing her district.

You know, Senator Kyl is another one who had meetings with the President at the White House. I’m trying to remember whether it was over border security or what, but I know he met with the President.

Every single time a legislator goes to the White House, he or she ends up doing something that will benefit the President. Senator Scott Brown went to the White House several times early on in his Senate career.

Something is fishy. Could the White House be saying or doing something that would make legislators act on the White House’s behalf?

CBO Director Doug Elmendorf was called to the White House while Obamacare was being debated over the months previous. All the figures previous to the passage of the bill looked good for the passage of Obamacare, which we know the figures are not good.
