It’s Not Just Republicans Going After Public Sector Unions

A map showing states with budgets in the red was flashed on the television screen. Needless to say, nearly the entire republic was red. Forty five states are facing big budget shortfalls, and lawmakers in every state know something has to change. Republican governors are in the spotlight, but it should be noted that a number of blue state Democrats are also targeting the unions.

Look at New York, the classically blue state where I live, home to  liberal lions like Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, Fiorello LaGuardia and Mario Cuomo.  Here our new governor Andrew Cuomo is seeking major concessions and threatening layoffs against the public sector unions, vowing to balance the state’s budget with spending cuts.  Cuomo has also promised — read his lips? — not to raise taxes, and has introduced what the New York Times editorial page calls a “radical” bill to cap property tax increases and require a super-majority to raise them by more than 2 percent a year.  Up to 9,800 state employees face layoffs under his new budget:  that is more than six times more people than Wisconsin governor Walker has threatened to lay off if his union bill isn’t passed.

Or go to Providence, Rhode Island, the deep blue capital of what a recent Gallup poll identified as, next to the District of Columbia and Vermont, the most liberal state in the nation, where the school board is notifying every single public school teacher in the city that they may be laid off.

Be sure to read the whole thing. It’s not just New York where Democrats are going after the unions. The Democrats are just a bit more subtle about it. The fact of the matter is the well has run dry. They’ve run out of other people’s money.

Via Instapundit who notes that the unions may be vehemently targeting Wisconsin to avoid going after popular Democrat governors. I think he’s right. Here in New York the unions are running ads calling for tax increases and other nonsense, but they aren’t specifically attacking Cuomo. At least not yet.

Related: The Washington Post also noted how some Democrats are beginning to side with the taxpayers for a change, and Red State pointed out why the unions are fighting with such vehemence.

The remarkable thing about each of these cases is union bosses’ underlying admission:Without the threat of being able to have workers fired, the unions would be, in the words of the socialist writer, “decimated.”

One Response to It’s Not Just Republicans Going After Public Sector Unions

Labor unions, specifically Union Leaders have dramatically changed from advocates for fellow employees, now “workers” (statist terminology), to agenda driven parasites in a symbiotic relationship using the workers as income streams for furthering themselves and ideology through politics.

They supposedly bargain in your behalf for improving conditions and compensation, the end result always being increased dues paid by membership, automatically deducted, just like payroll tax.

I would urge all union members to look into the background and connections of their National and local leadership and who they invite to speak and lobby. You’ll find progressive /socialist and or communist connections and ties as a historical fact. Ask them outright if you dare, and check into it. Maybe you already know.

Union members believing that their National Leadership is on the same page with them are simply being used as pawns.
As a union member, is this the ideology that you personally believe in? Does the socialist / communist want you to be an individual? Do they really believe you should have that extra car or boat, motorcycle, vacation home or even the opportunity for overtime to pay for it?

As long as you keep paying dues you say, that’s a fair trade. Fine if you think so, but remember the end game for them is not your vision of the American lifestyle you enjoy now; just look at any socialist /communist country and compare. The end game is near.
