Chicago Public School Forbids Children From Bringing Lunch From Home

Michelle Obama must be so proud! Children in a Chicago public school are forbidden from bringing lunches from home. If they don’t like what the school is serving they can go hungry. Check out the photo posted at the Chicago Tribune of a lunch served to the children. It looks like vomit.

Fernando Dominguez cut the figure of a young revolutionary leader during a recent lunch period at his elementary school.

“Who thinks the lunch is not good enough?” the seventh-grader shouted to his lunch mates in Spanish and English.

Dozens of hands flew in the air and fellow students shouted along: “We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch!”

Fernando waved his hand over the crowd and asked a visiting reporter: “Do you see the situation?”

At his public school, Little Village Academy on Chicago’s West Side, students are not allowed to pack lunches from home. Unless they have a medical excuse, they must eat the food served in the cafeteria.

The principal defends the policy, saying she’s just looking out for the kids. I guess she believes she knows better than their parents. A spokeswoman for the Chicago Public Schools says it’s up to principals whether or not to ban lunches, and that the principal in this case is just encouraging healthier eating. She didn’t mention that going hungry isn’t exactly healthy.

There’s also a financial motive for the schools to force children to buy lunch.

Any school that bans homemade lunches also puts more money in the pockets of the district’s food provider, Chartwells-Thompson. The federal government pays the district for each free or reduced-price lunch taken, and the caterer receives a set fee from the district per lunch.

Another school is a bit less harsh, children are allowed to bring lunch from home but sugary snacks are confiscated.

Many of the parents don’t like the policy forcing children to buy the school lunch, but they don’t have much recourse because so many students are stuck in public schools.

Yank those kids out of school. Lose them all that wonderful federal money that comes in per student.

This might enrage some parents to get off their butts and go to a school board meeting instead of staying home and watching American Idol. I said “might” because they have to put down the crack pipe first.

My nieces ans nephews come home starving everyday after throwing away these shipped in crappy meals in the East Cleveland school district.
If I were the parents I would file a lawsuit, How do you expect hungry children to learn? It would be interesting to see their school work scores after lunch. And I also KNOW! that the principal and staff DON’T EAT THAT CRAP! What is wrong with you PARENTS!

I just had to come back and ask the principal, Did you ever send a notice home to the parents informing them of what kinds of foods would be allowed for lunch? So they as well as the the children might gain a better education about healthy eating. Also Have you shown the nutritional facts, and shelf life of this food you are serving? I know everyone would be surprised! I understand that not every child has an ideal situation but to take away all rights is terrible. My son attended Cleveland schools, I frequently carried lunch to my son and his friends, but our STAFFS were inviting to parents at that time. I further wonder if this is a less advantaged area? of town?

Michelle Obama has NOTHING to do with this – from the article itself:

Carmona said she created the policy six years ago after watching students bring “bottles of soda and flaming hot chips” on field trips for their lunch. Although she would not name any other schools that employ such practices, she said it was fairly common.

Leave Ms. Obama out of this!
