President Obama called for an unusual late night news conference to discuss matters of national security. Shortly after that was announced it was reported that Osama Bin Laden was killed a week ago by US bombs. Fox News is reporting that they waited a week to make the announcement because the US wanted to do tests to confirm his identity. (This is incorrect. See below.) There’s no story to link to there yet, there’s just an announcement at the top of the home page. Geraldo Rivera says the body is in the possession of the United States.
At this moment, the only news outlet with any information online is the New York Times.
Osama bin Laden has been killed, a United States official said Sunday night.
No word yet on whether Bin Laden was killed by a drone strike.
Finally, a little bit of good news. On that note, I’m going back to bed
and will update this post in the morning.
Update: Now Fox News has a short piece posted.
President Obama is expected to deliver a statement from the White House Sunday night to discuss the major development.
Sources said bin Laden was killed by a U.S. bomb a week ago. The U.S. had been waiting for the results of a DNA test to confirm his identity.
May he rot in hell!
Update 2: ABC News must have had a story on ice, waiting to just fill in the blanks of where, when and how.
Osama bin Laden, hunted as the mastermind behind the worst-ever terrorist attack on U.S. soil, has been killed, sources told ABC News.
His death brings to an end a tumultuous life that saw bin Laden go from being the carefree son of a Saudi billionaire, to terrorist leader and the most wanted man in the world.
Bin Laden created and funded the al Qaeda terror network, which was responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States. The Saudi exile had been a man on the run since the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan overthrew the ruling Taliban regime, which harbored bin Laden.
In a video filmed two months after the Sept. 11 attacks, bin Laden gloated about the attack, saying it had exceeded even his “optimistic” calculations.
“Our terrorism is against America. Our terrorism is a blessed terrorism to prevent the unjust person from committing injustice and to stop American support for Israel, which kills our sons,” he said in the video.
There’s much more at the link.
Update 3: I just saw a twitter post that popped up on Google that says he was killed outside an Islamabad mansion. No link to confirm it. If true, there goes the theory that he was living in some cave. Are we now going to go after Pakistan for protecting him?
Update 4: Geraldo just said they used familial DNA to identify Bin Laden, and he also said it was reported that Bin Laden was living in a mansion in Islamabad.
Update 5: Before going to bed, I just want to say “thank you” to our dedicated troops. I’m so proud of you, and I know my fellow Americans share the sentiment. You rock!
OK, now I’m going back to bed.
Update 6: Now it’s morning. It was reported that the CIA carried out the operation that took out Bin Laden. I raise my glass of orange juice to them. Obviously, this is the top story of the morning and memeorandum has a huge thread and linked. See the reaction of Phillies fans to the news here. Pakistani’s had a less exuberant reaction.
Now a word of caution: The death of Bin Laden doesn’t mean our troops are coming home tomorrow. I wish it did, but it’s extremely unlikely.
Update 7: Correction: Bin Laden was killed in Abbottabad, not Islamabad.
Update 8: Conservative Hideout linked – thanks!
Update 9: President Bush released a statement.
Always politically correct, his body was handled according to Islamic practice. And his remains will be buried at sea so the lunatics don’t use his grave as a shrine.
Update 10: President Obama’s remarks can be found here.
Update 11: Another correction: New reports indicate that Navy Seals killed Bin Laden in a gun fight, and the operation led the operation. And the courier that led the US to Bin Laden was identified years ago by detainees at Guantanamo Bay. Good thing we didn’t close it.
Also, the operation didn’t take place a week ago. It happened Sunday.
Update 12: Thank you, Smitty!!!
