Remember when Bush was President and we were told the economy was terrible because unemployment was at 5.5% and all anyone could find were McJobs? That was Bush’s fault. But now that the economy is completely in the crapper, and unemployment is about 9% there’s nothing much President Obama can do about the economy.
President Barack Obama is heading into his reelection campaign with a flagging economy that appears incapable of producing the sustained job growth needed to push unemployment below crisis levels.
And there appears to be very little he can do about it, at least in the short term.
He could call off the dogs at the EPA, the Interior Department, and the NLRB, for starters. The administration could start issuing drilling permits which would ease up the price of oil and gas so people had more money to spend on other things. He could stop talking about raising taxes. There are plenty of things he could do.
The Other McCain adds:
See how this works? You can be sure that if a Republican were in the White House and unemployment was at 9.1%, there wouldn’t be any “Don’t blame the president” headlines in the newspapers.
