President Obama agreed to move up the timing of his big jobs speech tomorrow night so as not to interfere with the NFL’s season opener when the Green Bay Packers face the New Orleans Saints. Fans in Green Bay and Milwaukee won’t even have to give up their pre-game show, since the local NBC affiliates have opted to go with football over another Obama jobs speech.
The Washington Examiner reported:
The NBC affiliate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, WTMJ TV announced yesterday they will not be airing Obama’s jobs speech at 7 PM EST Thursday night. instead they are opting for their own pre-game coverage of the Packers Saints game scheduled to kick off at 8 PM. Green Bay’s NBC affiliate, NBC 26, will also go with the Packers pre-game show over Obama.
Saints fans aren’t going to be so lucky, they’re getting the president’s speech. Speaking of which, Nancy Pelosi is not happy that the Republicans chose not to deliver a rebuttal to the speech. I guess she wanted them to be involved in ticking off sports fans everywhere.
“The Republicans’ refusal to respond to the president’s proposal on jobs is not only disrespectful to him, but to the American people,” Pelosi said.
But Boehner spokesman Mike Steel said Obama’s proposals on Thursday “will rise or fall on their own merits,” suggesting a GOP response was not needed.
“Republicans are, and have been, entirely focused on job creation. Every member of Congress, and — more importantly — the American people, will provide a reaction to the president’s address,” Steel said. …
Let’s face it, we won’t see job creation until Obama’s out of the White House and Democrats lose control of the Senate. May as well enjoy a football game.
