‘You’re the same height as my wife’ is harassment? – Update – Video Added

No wonder Jonathan Martin didn’t want to get into the details of the allegations against Herman Cain. If they’re even close to his version of events he would have been laughed out of the room. Martin said the bad behavior involved both verbal and physical gestures. Sounds pretty bad right? Well, Cain talked to Greta Van Susteren, and sure enough, he recalls a hand gesture and a verbal comment.

The Washington Examiner has the preview:

Van Susteren asked what Cain did that led to the accusation. There were reportedly more than one accusations in the complaint, but Cain said he recalled just one incident. “She was in my office one day, and I made a gesture saying — and I was standing close to her — and I made a gesture saying you are the same height as my wife. And I brought my hand up to my chin saying, ‘My wife comes up to my chin.‘” At that point, Cain gestured with his flattened palm near his chin. “And that was put in there [the complaint] as something that made her uncomfortable,” Cain said, “something that was in the sexual harassment charge.”

That’s the strangest pick up line I’ve ever heard. Maybe I’m naive, but if a man said that to me, I would think “I’m about the same height as his wife.”

Update: The article above was updated, and in the update Cain was quoted as saying [and I paraphrase] that his counsel advised him that the woman had initially made a pretty substantial settlement demand, but in the end she was given two to three months salary. He said he wasn’t sure of the amount. He also denied any knowledge of a second woman’s claims.

Earlier today Cain denied knowledge of the settlement. I’m not clear as to whether counsel just told him about the settlement, or whether he knew about it at the time.

A very nice diversion tactic from the leftist smear merchants that’s utterly meaningless. Meanwhile, The Regime borrowed four billion dollars on the American taxpayers today. We borrowed that yesterday as well and we’ll borrow that every single day forward until we have leadership that will put a halt to this destructive insanity.

It’s unlikely he knew about any settlement at the time, other than scuttlebutt. You pay an extortionist–er, complainant–and nobody discusses the details outside of the room or the settlement is revoked. It really is possible to do that and nobody pass on the details to the (usually wrongfully) accused party. In the early 1990s, post-Anita Hill, EVERYBODY seemed to be harassing everybody else. A lot of accusers gained something tangible by making accusations they couldn’t prove. Even with our top executives, who made a lot of money for the company, it wasn’t tolerated and they’d be fired–er, “resigned to pursue other endeavors”. Because keeping an actual harasser on the payroll, even at the top, is so not worth it, they cost too much. I’m not buying “the original complaint”, nor the timing on this “breaking news”. Load of distracting crap. Really ancient crap at that.

How many girls did he drown in Cape Cod? How many has he trashed and destroyed, calling them trailer trash and low-lifes? Paula Jones might come to mind. Remember Kathleen Willey? Has Cain killed anybody’s cat, or slashed their tires? Don’t try to remember any uproar from the Big Media about those. How about the “Waitress Sandwiches”? (Ted Kennedy and Chris Dodd’s favorite lunch)? Not much coverage on those little games, was there? How can anyone believe a word Big Media say or print?

No, I didn’t believe O.J. because the preponderance of evidence suggested he was guilty. Just as the preponderance here suggests Politico is doing someone else’s dirty work and the best they could come up with is a minor, unproven allegation from 15 years ago at the height of the, shall we call it, “sexual harassment bubble”.

That you would take his recollection as the real story, and then pose the question, “that’s harassment?”, is silly. For one, the fact that Cain remembers such a trivial detail is suspect. When the allegations get specific, you’ll find that this trivial recollection is in fact a preemptive contradiction to the story that will be told. Maybe the allegations are baseless; but if they aren’t, which means that Cain is lying, this will be a very clear example of the complicated type of deceit that thinktanky political campaigns engage in.
