The Keystone XL pipeline is a project that requires no taxpayer funding and would create at least 20,000 jobs. There’s no telling how many indirect jobs the project would create, but if President Obama and his environmental fundamentalist friends have their way we’ll never know. His administration has put approval for the shovel-ready project on hold until after the 2012 election.
He has been pushing hard for an extension of a payroll tax cut (the tax that is purported to fund Social Security) and an extension of unemployment benefits. House Republicans said they will attach an amendment to the tax cut bill that would allow the Keystone project to proceed. It would really be a gift to President Obama, seeing that job creation would help him in his effort to win a second term. But he’s said that if such an amendment is attached he will veto it. He went even further, stating during an unannounced news conference today that an extension of unemployment benefits and the measly little payroll tax cut (that has done nothing to help the economy) will create more jobs than the Keystone project his administration shelved.
“I would not ask anyone to do something I’m not willing to do myself,” Obama said when asked if he would go on vacation while keeping Congress in Washington D.C. “We are going to stay here as long as it takes [to get unemployment extended and pass the payroll tax cut].”
As Obama called for passage of those bills, he also responded to a recent Republican push to require him to approve the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada. “However many jobs might be generated by the Keystone pipeline,” he said, “it’s going to be a lot fewer than the jobs created by the payroll tax cut and extending unemployment insurance.” (Read More)
Is he insane? Unemployment benefits will create more jobs than a project that actually creates tens of thousands of jobs? Heck, the project would help offset the payroll tax cut he’s pushing for, seeing that 20,000 or more people would start paying income taxes, not to mention the other revenue the project would generate for the government. I guess he’d prefer to see those jobs go to China.
It sure would be nice to have a president with an inkling about how jobs and wealth are created. It’s quite obvious at this point that this president only knows how to enrich his cronies at the expense of the taxpayers and hard working Americans.

Update 4: Daily Pundit linked, and on the insanity question added:
He’s not insane, he’s an idiot. This is a perfect example of the socialist “something for nothing” theory of economic value, in which money stolen by the government from productive people and purposes is then handed to the non-productive, and the result of this is somehow a net gain in production and productivity.
Yet because of the iron law of TANSTAAFL, these Ponzi schemes always eventually collapse, usually in mass murders and epic tyranny. And on second thought: that this progression occurs over and over again, and is well known, and is yet still the very heart of the leftist project, may, indeed, be an indicator of insanity.
I guess we can blame it on public education. (BTW, what is TANSTAAFL? I know, I should know what that stands for, but I don’t.)

[...] The Lonely Conservative asks “Is he insane?” Quite possibly, though I’m not sure that has bearing on this foolish pronouncement, which seems to be standard Democrat idiocy. Remember Pelosi stating that “unemployment benefits create jobs faster than almost any other initiative you can name”? I have to wonder, if unemployment benefits and the payroll tax cut are super wonderful awesome, why have so few jobs been created? Why, four years since (Democrats took over Congress and) the economy started melting down and the job market going south, has the unemployment rate been in the high eights or higher consistently with those measures in place? The president is not interested in improving the economy or creating jobs! He appears instead to be in step with global attempts to interrupt, devalue, and destroy the most hated country in the Arab world.
See link: http://www.jpost.com/Opinion/Columnists/Article.aspx?id=172101
He has consistantly supported the Arab League, and refused to end hostitities in Lybia, even when the law required it.
A large part of his illegal overseas campaign contributions came from the ‘invented’ Palistanians.
