This afternoon I had the pleasure of speaking with US Senate candidate and former JAG officer Brian K. Hill from Connecticut. When it comes to picking Senate candidates to support in primaries, Hill is worthy of attention. It looks like he could have a primary battle with Linda McMahon (who lost her last Senate bid) and former Rep. Chris Shays (who is not exactly conservative.)
Hill said he’s running because we’re “on the decline as a country.” He noted the “unprecedented attack on business, both nationally and in Connecticut,” the sorry state of our schools and cities, and the all-too prevalent entitlement mentality. He described the war on poverty and expanding welfare state as “destroying the American spirit by fostering dependency on government.”
Hill is proud to claim that he’s the only candidate who has actually cut government spending. As a JAG attorney it was his job to sign off on military expenditures and review government contracts. In one instance, he saved the taxpayers a “couple of million dollars” when he rejected a contract for the purchase of new computers. He directed the department to shop around for a better per unit price and after about forty five days the company with the original quote dropped their price by forty percent.
When I asked him about the recent decision to cut hazard pay to the troops, he said there are ways to cut military spending without taking money from our troops. He advocates for a revamping of how government contracts are awarded. He’s also concerned about how thin the military is being stretched these days, even as threats from unfriendly nations like Iran, North Korea and China are on the rise. But, he said, “Unless we get our fiscal house in order we can’t address many of these issues.” The economy and fiscal issues are his top priorities.
Hill is appalled by the $15 trillion national debt. (Just today it was reported that we’ve now had forty straight months of deficit spending.) He’s baffled by the lack of outrage over the National Defense Authorization Act, which he calls “worse than the Patriot Act” that liberals used to howl about. He also wonders why, as our cities continue to deteriorate, voters continue electing liberal Democrats whose policies brought about so many of the problems facing our cities.
He told me that the black community is facing a nine to ten percent dropout rate in their schools. He believes the solution for improving education is not more federal programs, but more local control. Hill said that “government is the problem, not the solution” to most of what ails our country today.
It seems to me that Hill “gets it” and would be a fine candidate for the US Senate. We need more like him to step up and run.

Congrats to you for the privilidge of speaking with Hill!
Most Americans are appalled by a $15 Trillion debt, but those who are slaves to the welfare system are placated by the economics of the socialist! They cannot see the forest for the trees!
We need more people like Brian Hill in office to counter the insane Obamanomics now!
Go Brian!
