Komen Caves – Update – Or Did They?

That didn’t take long. The Susan G. Komen Foundation caved to the demands of Planned Parenthood and the radical left.

The Washington Post reported:

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Foundation Friday announced it would revise a controversial new policy that barred the organization from funding Planned Parenthood.

The foundation said that Planned Parenthood would now be eligible to apply for grants. It did not, however, address other reasons Komen has cited for why it might choose not to approve such grants.

“Our original desire was to fulfill our fiduciary duty to our donors by not funding grant applications made by organizations under investigation,” a Friday statement said. “ We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair.”

“We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities,” the statement continues.

The statement left some ambiguity, however, because it did not mention a second reason Komen has given for ending Planned Parenthood’s funding: That the group did not provide direct mammogram services, but instead referred patients out to other locations.

Earlier today I heard that Komen’s fundraising rose by 100% after announcing they were going to stop sending funds to PP. I wonder how many people now wish they had held off.

Update: Perhaps I rushed to judgment. Read Da TechGuy’s post. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

I wonder if the Komen Foundation was talked to by the DOJ yesterday and threatened with lawsuits? This would be in line with the way AG Holder has conducted his civil rights rampage at the Department of Injustice.

Can those who donated to her organization before she caved cancel their checks?

If it’s too late to cancel funds given to Komen after they cut ties to planned parenthood it isn’t too late to stop giving to them since they caved to the libs. I for one did not know Komen was contributing to pp and was appalled to hear it. Not only am I anti abortion but i don’t appreciate funds that are supposed to be going for cancer research funding abortion. There are better and more worthy cancer research organizations out there than Komen. The Lustgarten pancreatic cancer group is a great one. 100 % of what they get from donations go to research. Pancreatic cancer is the most deadly cancer there is and is a devastating illness. There are more cases diagnosed every year and it needs more attention than breast cancer because the survival rate for breast cancer is much much better.

The radical left-wing has used Alinsky tactics and has broken the law, hacking the Komen website, to create havoc and get their way.
Businesses and individuals need to learn from this chaotic event how to plan for radical interference from the radical left.
This is an outrage; those who broke the law to attack Komen should be prosecuted!
If Holder wasn’t busy tap dancing in front of congress, perhaps he could do his other job, enforcing the law.

Does any of this sound like the “New Coke” marketing ploy that occurred years ago when Coke brought out a new product, people rebelled and when they brought back the old coke, sales increased?

If funding increased during this period and they still have means by which to decrease funding in the future, why reverse the decision? And why announce the decision in the first place?

If you do not want to make headlines, changes can be made slowly over time to decrease grants until those grants are basically worthless. But announcing something that involves a controversial organization is going to be controversial because someone is going to make it so.

Either this was planned and the Komen foundation has some either very smart marketing people involved on the board (increased funding due to decision) or it was not planned and the foundation some very stupid people on the board (increased negative scrutiny due to decision).

Komen could have announced they were going to fund providers directly and all referring agencies would receive a small fee for the referral. They would contract with certified breast centers across the country to insure women were receiving the highest quality care available with mammograms read by the best radiologist. Then later, that referral fee could have been reduced and eliminated with much less fan fare.

But they did increase funding, so someone was smart.
