Here He Goes Again – Obama Pushing Vote on Ending ‘Oil Subsidies’

According to The Hill, President Obama is planning to push Congress into voting to end “subsidies” for oil companies. This is getting so old.

President Obama intends to press lawmakers Thursday to quickly strip billions of dollars in oil industry tax breaks, remarks that will come during his second energy-themed speech in two weeks aimed at blunting GOP attacks over gasoline prices.

Obama will speak Thursday afternoon at Nashua Community College in the swing state of New Hampshire.

“In Nashua, the President will … reiterate his call to repeal the unwarranted $4 billion in annual subsides handed out to oil and gas companies, and will urge Congress to take a vote on the repeal in the coming weeks,” a White House official said ahead of Obama’s remarks.

The article goes on to note that there’s almost no chance anything of the sort will pass due to opposition from Republicans and Democrats alike. Obama knows that, all he’s looking for is  a sound bite and trying to score some political points while deflecting attention away from his disastrous policies.

As for the subsidies he’s talking about, they are tax incentives available to all manufacturers. What he really wants to do is raise taxes on oil companies, and those companies would then pass those costs along to consumers. How many times do we have to go over this?

I have an idea. How about we end the subsidies to all of Obama’s friends at the green companies?

Last month, GM reported a record profit of $7.6 billion for 2011. Shouldn’t we end the subsidies for the auto industry? Normal businesses do not need the gov’t to chip in $10,000 so people can afford their product. But instead of having to lower their prices (and maybe even lose money for a time – a common business practice) to attract buyers, GM gets to keep making record profits while the taxpayers subsidize electric cars. And this is a literal subsidy, not the tax deductions available to all businesses (including GM) that the president wants to take away from the oil companies.

Obama’s oil-drilling “permatorium” is the cause for the higher gas prices. He is making the oil industry the scapegoat for his own poor ideological decisions.
