Arguments were heard today in the Supreme Court in the lawsuit the Obama administration brought against the state of Arizona’s immigration law. It looks like the administration’s lawyer had another bad day. According to The Washington Times, he appeared to have trouble with even the liberal justices.
Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli Jr. said the federal government has limited resources and should have the right to determine the extent of calls it gets about possible illegal immigrants.
“These decisions have to be made at the national level,” he said.
But even Democratic-appointed justices were uncertain of that.
“I’m terribly confused by your answer,” said Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who went on to say that the federal government can always decline to pick up illegal immigrants when Arizona officials call.
The Obama administration was on its firmest ground when it argued Arizona should not be allowed to impose state penalties such as jail time against illegal immigrants who try to seek jobs. (Read More)
Democrats must believe the administration isn’t going to prevail in court, because they’re already working on Plan B, headed up by Senator Chuck (You) Schumer.
Update: Linked by Smitty at The Other McCain, who recommends counseling on my subtle profanity.

With Obama in the White House, liberals like Schumer are really throwing their weight around.
Schumer vowed that if the Supremes don’t rule SB 1070 unconstitutional, he’ll introduce legislation that will ban any state from taking any action to enforce immigration laws on its own.
IOW, either the Supremes rule the way Schumer wants, or he’ll fix their wagon.
The idea that states can’t enforce Federal laws without Federal permission is just plain nuts–and even MORE likely to be found unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Plenty of Federal laws get enforced by first responders at the state level. (Kidnapping is a Federal crime. But obviously under state and local laws, state and local cops are usually the first ones at the crime scene, before the FBI shows up. They don’t wait for Obama’s Justice Department to give them permission.)

If SB1070 is struck down then Arizona should give up enforcing other federal laws. The one I have in mind are drug laws.
Let’s say a state trooper pulls over a vehicle for speeding. The trooper smells the distinct odor of marijuana and asks the driver where they are headed. If the driver says anywhere but Arizona or any state along the border, the trooper should wish the driver a nice day and let them go.

Every day should be a bad day for Obama, from now to his defeat in the November 2012 presidential election (Schumer too)!

Here’s a very basic, almost infantile question: Why do we no longer believe in law and order? Why is it alright for any foreign person to break the law and sashay in here??? Do we enforce only the laws we agree with? I know many hardworking Mexican citizens living and working here LEGALLY. They have no use for illegals, either, and use a very different term to describe them (and it’s not “undocumented”).
Rather than the Liberal “if it feels good, do it” mentality, how about recognizing law as law and enforcing it for a change???

You are right, this is simple! There is obviously a hidden agenda operating here! Obviously the Obama administration wants to rule with impunity and without reguard to the law!
It smells like the government is getting money (maybe kickbacks from smugglers) and a wish that these policies will enhance the Hispanic vote along with increased executive powers over states!
