Because if you go down the official totalitarian checklist, it’s the progressive movement that is ticking off the requisite agenda items, one by one.

Ah it is MayDay. So, I’m reading REDS by Ted Morgan. Lots of stuff on what commies were up to. How about Elizabeth Bentley – a courier who took films from agents and handed them to KGB folks. She knew Mary Price – a secretary who worked for Walter Lipmann, the Rush of the 1940s. Anything like leaks to Lipmann went straight to the KGB. EB handled Duncan Lee of the OSS – Wild Bill Donovan’s assistant ! Lee had top security clearance and got info from everywhere about everything. EB handled the Silvermaster group = Harry Dexter White at the Treasury dept. In fact White RAN the Treasury dept. And Lauchin Currie, and … EB also handled the Perlo Group. It was Perlo’s wife who had a few stiff drinks and wrote a letter to FDR and the FBI explaining that her husband was running a spy ring in Washington DC. That is how J. Edgar Hoover found out about this stuff.
Commies don’t sit around reading the Manifesto. They don’t really care about Mass Movements. What they DO care about is INFORMATION they might be able to use. A secretary at Lipmann’s office. A researcher at Drew Pearson’s office. An inspector at Signals Lab at Fort Monmouth. Anybody who thinks commies are stupid should be asking – how did they know where to get access to EVERYTHING. They kept track of the Media, and all secret technological developments.
Much was known from VENONA – 2900 decoded messages to and from Moscow – out of about a million – about 3%. 349 code names, but only 171 identified. Nobody knows who the other 178 were. How do we know VENONA wasn’t made up ? Because Feklisov said it was accurate – he ought to know, he was the KGB handler for the Rosenberg group, which included Barr and Sarant at Fort Monmouth. He wrote a book too.

The bottom line is – They know everything about you. You know nothing about them. How does that stack up ? And people wonder why I get ticked off at Bill Moyers for going on about McCarthyism. Hey – McCarthy vastly underestimated what the commies were up to – “American” commies whose loyalty was to the Soviet Union and merrily volunteered to dig up all the info they could to help Uncle Joe Stalin. Wanna know why the Left DETESTS Richard Nixon ? He debriefed Whittaker Chambers and exposed the spy rings in Washington – esp Alger Hiss – the guy who presided over the Founding of the U.N. At every opportunity they say Nixon was corrupt and evil. The truth is, commies were totalitarian mass murderers who ripped off America for every little thing they could get their hands on. I think somebody ought to total up the monetary damages and tell the American People what it cost, what was nullified, and what they did. Anybody who underestimates the idea that Knowledge Is Power should have a look at what they did.

correction: Walter Lippmann was the OPPOSITE of Rush – a real progressive and elitist. But he had a big mouth and was very influential.
