I saw this video over the weekend but was too busy to post it. It slipped my mind until I saw that Rush Limbaugh devoted a good part of his show to it today. Mr. McCullough is an English teacher and the son of author and historian David McCullough, which is why his name may sound familiar. Anyway, here’s the video of the “You are not special” speech that’s been getting so much attention. Good stuff here.
Update: Linked by The Temple of MUT – thanks!

I couldn’t agree more with Mr David McCoullough Jr. Exactly what I would have said, word for word. But knowing most of the me generation, I doubt any of them even understands what he said, let alone will take his advice. This young people of America. not all, 75% or more, are too self-absorbed, materialistic, greed for instant gratification, and have little to none respect for anyone, not even themselves. Thus I contend, his words as wise and prolific as they were, fell on deaf ears. But even so, if at even 1 student was able to take from it it’s essence and meaning and apply it in their daily life, then it was well worth the effort to make such an excellent commencement speech, as maybe that someone will do great things for humanity and society, and not just for themselves.
In regards to his reference of the graduating High school students not being special, he is absolutely correct, as no one is any better. ie; lesser or greater, than any one else in this world, only their responsibilities in life are lesser or greater.

I’m surprised the poor little Dears didn’t boo him off the stage and file lawsuits for hurting their widdle feelings.

Funny that so many conservatives are siding with the liberals on this one. McCullough told the kids to be selfless–to come up with a way of life and policies that support others, we’re not in it alone. Very surprising to see this agreement from conservatives and liberals alike. The Wellesley kids applauded him–they were psyched by the message. No concerns about crying or booing–they want others to hear the message.

Debbie, most conservative believe in extending a hand, helping others – those who are willing to help themselves. “A hand up, not a hand out.”

This reminds me a lot of a TEDx talk from last year entitled, “You’re Not That Great: A Motivational Speech.” After years of being kid-gloved people really seem hungry for this kind of message.
