Some lefty troll has obviously found a way to “like” and “dislike” comments on this blog more than one time and is disliking the comments of our regular readers so those comments get hidden. Just like the rest of you, I can only like or dislike a comment once, so I have no control over this other than to remove the feature that many of you enjoy. It is sad when people have to be nasty and mean. But that seems to be the way of the liberal. We found that in our own church years ago. The liberal theologians, who decided God’s Word was no longer God’s Word, but just suggestions that you can take or leave, harassed those of us who remained in the Word. It got pretty nasty. I was a young woman, and quite appalled by it all. But they finally left to join other liberals, and they have made a real mess of their church. Very sad. I continue to pray for them.

Oh, dear. Well I am 65 years old, and I don’t get along with my computer too well. And, we just had to get a new one, because ours got fried in a surge when the power came back on a few weeks ago. So, I am trying to deal with Windows 7, which came with so much garbage that slows it down horribly! But I will try!

If you’d prefer to use your own default image (perhaps your logo, a funny face, whatever), then you can easily do so by supplying the URL to an image in the d= or default= parameter. The URL should be URL-encoded to ensure that it carries across correctly, for example:

Carol, the easy thing to do is:
1)click the “Get your Gravatar Today” button at the link LC posted above…it will take you to a page in which you enter an email address
2)enter an email address (or, create a wordpress identity) – you can create a “throwaway” address at gmail if you don’t want to associate your “real” email, because having the gravatar will “hot-link” your name and take people to a profile. You might not want people seeing a real profile)
3)they will send you a confirmation email with a link to click
4)click the link, it will take you to a page where you can upload a picture from your computer, or use one that is stored on the internet
When you leave comments, the picture will show with your comment if you post using the email associated with your avatar.

Well, it sounds easy, but I don’t know how to create an email address. I guess I’ll just have to keep the little blue thingy. I’m pretty good at Word and Outlook email, but other than that, I get confused easily! That’s what happens when you are an old person!
I was on Facebook for a month. Only to see pictures of my grandchildren, which were posted once! I really dislike FB very, very much. So, I got out of it. I email and call people (on a dumb phone!)

One suggestion to fix this is you may wish to look into a different comment and/or comment rating plugin for wordpress. It may be someone who is exploiting a flaw in this particular one. Just a thought.

The biggest way to counter a troll is simply to -ignore- them. They’ll get bored and move on soon enough. What you don’t do is make a post feeding the trolls ego, because no matter how much ‘time’ is on that trolls hand… fact is if even just a few people spend replying to his actions, he’s wasted more of your time overall then his own.
Also, you can get around bannings and comments by using simple proxy tools. It’s so easy that anyone with google search can do it.

I tend to think of it as an honor. Trolls harassing your website is a sign of your power. If what you and your commenter’s said was obviously flawed or downright wrong, they would argue it. But to just blindly :dislike” you/us without debate is a sure sign of desperation on their part.

This struck a chord with me because of people I find on Facebook as well. I mostly look at the site for photos of my friends and family. When there is a funny cartoon posted, there are always some snotty remarks from what I would call trolls who engage in all kinds of liberal attacks such as ad hominem, straw man. pettifogging etc. Sometime I allow myself to become drawn into their petty games and it becomes laughable at their ability to deflect, obfuscate and otherwise ruin rational dialog. It usually ends with them calling me crazy or worse and never do they present facts to suport absurd claims.

Is there a way to get rid of the dislike feature altogether? That way if someone doesnt like the comment they have to just move on. If someone does like the comment they can still use the like button. Many other blogs are setup this way.
