The kids are off school for the holidays so I took the week off, too. There was no need to wake up early so I didn’t set the alarm. The kids and I all slept late. I woke up to the sound of a plow. I ran to the window and saw a friend was trying to plow our driveway. Unfortunately, I didn’t get downstairs fast enough to run out and move my car out of his way.
Our driveway is wide, we can park about four vehicles side by side, which is nice because nobody gets blocked in the driveway. But it’s a real pain when it snows. We got rid of an old snow blower shortly after we moved here because it didn’t throw the snow far enough to reach the edge of the driveway from the middle. Which means we shovel unless someone comes along and plows for us. It’s no big deal when we only get an inch or two. But this is Central New York.
This is the side of the driveway I didn’t shovel, that was partially plowed. You can also see the road at the top of the picture.
This is the side I shoveled. It took an hour just to make a spot big enough to pull the car back in. The snow was up to my knees. I’m thinking it was about 14″.
Oh well, it was a good workout, which I needed after all of the goodies I ate on Christmas. And now we can get out to run some errands.
Mr. LC and I were talking about investing in a snow blower that’s strong enough to handle our driveway. I’m thinking that’s a good idea.
(Oh, and for anyone wondering why he didn’t shovel the driveway – he’s at work.)
Update: Here’s a shot of our front yard and the street. There is a stone walkway under there somewhere. I’ll let the kids shovel that.

Thanks for a non-political refresher!

No problem! I just had to shovel more. We went out to get some groceries and I realized I didn’t leave enough space on both sides of the car for everyone to get in and out. I tried driving over the big piles but that just made it messy and the tire tracks didn’t leave enough of a clear path for walking. haha!

Bring on that global warming!!! I’ve had good luck with a Toro snow thrower. It’s not a two stage type blower but it’s one of their largest electric start models and it cleans down to the pavement. It’ll throw the heavy wet stuff about thirty feet. In fact it will throw just about anything that it will swallow like stones, cans, bottles, etc. with incredible force. So if you get one, watch where you point it.
Ours is about ten years old but it looks and works like this new one:

It doesn’t snow much up here in WA state. I miss the snow….umm…no I don’t.

My husband just bought a Troy-Bilt 2-stage snow blower yesterday (we never owned one before–always shoveled, but thought a snow blower might come in handy up here in God’s country)–worked like a charm this morning.
The employees at Lowe’s yesterday asked him if he knew something they didn’t. Guess he did.

On our first Christmas here, we got 14″ of snow, and lost power for 30 hours.
At any rate, my darling bride got a snow blower for my Christmas present in 2003, and I have since discovered how they work. If snow is predicted, and I have the snow blower ready to go — fueled up, and started before the flakes fall — we don’t get much snow. If it isn’t ready to go, we’ll get buried!
So, get a good blow snower, and keep it ready, and then you won’t really need it!

Mr. LC called Home Depot to see if they had any snow blowers in stock. They don’t. Maybe tomorrow. He didn’t bother with Lowes because he has some Home Depot gift cards. He ended up shoveling the rest of the driveway and it’s nice and clear now.

Just lovely! Here in the Saratoga county area we got about 6 to 8 inches. Such a beautiful sight!
