Progressive Democrats never let a crisis go to waste. They used Hurricane Sandy to push their climate change agenda and now this. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and the Democrats in the state legislature are looking at ramming through stricter gun control measures, possibly even during a special Christmas week legislative session. The Democrats control the Assembly, and Republicans have tenuous control over the Senate because of four Democrats who defied their party and caucus with the GOP. Those four Democrats are likely to be supportive of increased gun control (even though the state already has tight restrictions on guns) so this is not out of the realm of possibility.
A law could be enacted in a rare special session during the holiday week or in an agreement, and could be part of Cuomo’s State of the State speech he’s scheduled to deliver on Jan. 9. Cuomo this week said he plans to make gun control proposals part of his annual speech that sets his legislative agenda.
“No one is talking about making guns illegal,” Cuomo said Monday. “No one is talking about legitimate hunters and sportspeople. We’re talking about illegal guns. We’re talking about abuse of guns. We’re talking about guns that have no real hunting or sporting purpose. But it’s an emotional topic and it is a question of communication. It’s a question of degree.”
Cuomo wants to address what he calls “significant loopholes” in New York’s gun laws, which are already among the most restrictive in the nation.
Sherrill Mayor William Vineall said the Sandy Hook mass murders are part of a complex problem. “It’s not about gun control. It’s about our society, and we need to bring society under control,” he said, “We need to get down to the roots of the problem.”
Vineall said, even with all the gun laws currently on the books, it is still too easy to evade them to obtain certain types of guns. (Read More)
The above article goes on to note how criminals have gotten their hands on guns in New York, despite the already strict laws. No new law is going to change that.
Cuomo’s argument about hunting was just addressed yesterday at Hot Air. Be sure to read it, as this has nothing to do with hunting.
Update: Confiscation and mandatory sale to the state are options Cuomo has on the table.
In the interview, Mr. Cuomo did not offer specifics about the measures he might propose, but, while discussing assault weapons, he said: “Confiscation could be an option. Mandatory sale to the state could be an option. Permitting could be an option — keep your gun but permit it.”
He did say he won’t be doing anything during the Christmas holiday, so he’ll wait a week or two.
Update: Linked by Big Pulpit, thanks!

We need to have a very serious, lengthy and open discussion on the intent of The Second Amendment. It’s certainly not put there by Our Founders for hunting. Just like the degradation of The First Amendment by McCain-Feingold, the American public is uninformed and misled.
The real issue with The Second Amendment isn’t guns itself and it certainly isn’t about hunting as the Governor misleading mentions. The truth is it’s there as a check to insure deadly force in the hands of the governed against out of control, opressive government that The Founders had already been subjects of and didn’t want us to have the same fate, and Americans in today’s dumbed down, clinically uncivil society have a hard time wrapping their brains around that.
Let’s have a long talk about politicians and their creeping theft of our freedoms. Let’s talk about the meaning of “…, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed”. Governor Cuomo, sir, it’s there for people like you.

Now a CT resident, my hometown is in the midst of the Finger Lakes area of NY, a rural farming area where hunting and conservatism were (at one time) the mainstay.
Michigan is right-the 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with hunting. The sad truth is that the progressive liberals are going to chip away at it with the permission of the willfully ignorant until we are in a situation that will be unfortunately irreversible.
In the meantime, CT has a Super Majority in her General Assembly that is currently hell-bent on doing the same PLUS putting a 50% tax on ammo. That’s a 5 and a 0, folks. If you are from CT you already know that the Governor and his Super Majority react to every crisis with a tax.
Time for this conservative to move “home” and get involved with a conservative movement to make sure NY doesn’t get any worse.

It’s already against the law to murder 26 people. How’s that working out? Pppppffffftttt.

On your update:
A Governor has a high hurdle after SCOTUS decisions to impose relinquishment of arms for money. But like tobacco that the left has vilified for decades, it’s all ok if they get “a piece of the action” through tax or permit. Many, many Democrat voters are firearm owners and NRA members; we’ll see.

Well, his father is responsible for me joining the NRA. It was not the riots and mayhem in NYC or being held up at knifepoint or any of that – it was on the eve of the Kuwait war when anyone could see the potential for a war in the middle east spinning out of control. If you have to go, then it is a very good idea to know the rifle. But Cuomo was going to ban the AR which is the closest thing to an M16 – for the lameass reason you see in the article. By saying an AR has nothing to do with hunting or sporting he conveniently denies that for over 300 years a whole bunch of americans were at war and what he calls the ‘gun culture’ is just plain old american culture that developed over that time. It did not spread as an ideology.
So — what you have here is a Values War. You have the libs who want any newcomers to assimilate to their view, versus the traditional avenues of assimilation. The problem is that the libs want to do what Adolph Hitler did – ban guns. Sorry – that is unacceptable. Period. But we can see where some of it comes from. There were riots way back when in NYC where lots of unassimilated and thus irresponsible nitwits were packing heat and there was a bloodbath – whereupon NYC went for gun control. On the other hand, in England Parliament was persuaded to disarm returning soldiers on fears there would be a commie revolution. That was smart – now there are commies all over england.
So – assimilation is a huge issue where millions of people come here and think they can wing it. It touches the whole subject of out-of-control immigration. People who have not yet got the hang of living here will do stupid things, especially in a crowd. Hassan is no surprise. He never should have been allowed in the USA, never mind the army, never mind being allowed anywhere near a gun. American values do NOT include yelling alahu akbar and shooting other americans. Nor do we sacrifice chickens on the steps of the Supreme Court to persuade the gods to influence the judges. Idiot libs think all cultures are the same rather than the obvious fact that people adapt to their circumstances over time. Of course, the circumstances of a Gold Rush produces a culture with lots of gambling on everything in sight, lots of fighting, and not the sort of place to bring the wife and kids, and ends up producing ghost towns rather than quaint little peaceful villages. This appears to be part of the imagery the libs use – the ‘wild west’ atmosphere they always predict. It is therefore amusing when their predictions fail and the crime rate DROPS (because its the criminals who are scared rather than the citizens).
I thought it instructive that Paul Barrett told Brian Lehrer that he must concede that if someone at the school could have defended the children, a lot more of them would be alive. But Brian continues his position that there are so many guns “in private hands” , and furthermore the legislators should ban handguns and not just focus on assault weapons. I was wondering why Brian even had the guy on his show.
These libnuts go on like the revolution was a long time ago and nobody is going to attack us. That is amusing until you consider that in the 1977 blackout there were more looters in manhattan than there were soldiers in the Continental Army. Ditto for rioters in the Rodney King riots, the Newark riots, the Washington riots – one could go on at length. Ok, where were Cuomo and Bloomberg when little old ladies in the East Village needed protection from the rampant arson and punks knocking them down to take their checks or any gold chains. Hey – the mayor has more important things to worry about, and so do the police. So the libs don’t like to go there, and have some smartass response to put you down. They think they are clever.

BURP. When Andy Cuomo was Clinton’s HUD Secretary, he and other states sued Connecticut’s Smith & Wesson to get them to “comply with smart gun technology and pay-to-play” if Smith & Wesson sold guns to the government, he would drop the law suits. BURP.
Andy is for illegal immigration of any terrorist in his sanctuary state but not voter id. That’s mob rule Andy; first in line to protect the criminals and to heck with the legal, law abiding citizens or enforce laws already on the books.

Nothing like Gun Hysteria that relieves politicians of using emotions not facts to push through their agenda. Disarm law abiding citizens and leave them at the mercy of armed criminals and the insane. Over a million incidents of legally armed citizens prevented crimes in the US this year. A statistic suppressed or ignored by the leftist media. But we have over 60,000 Gang members, the Nation of Islam, the Crips, Bloods, M16 well armed with weapons that can’t be traced. Thousands of assault weapons were dumped on the market by Holder but we must ignore incompetence by this Administration.
