It doesn’t matter what the Republicans do these days. They’re damned if they do and damned if they don’t. I met with some local activists last night and they made it clear in no uncertain terms that they loathe the GOP. That’s all fine and good, but look at the alternative.
It’s not that I don’t totally get the sentiment. We conservatives want representatives who will stand up for us and our values. We want fierce defenders of capitalism, private property and life itself. If not for the media, perhaps we’d get that. But, we have this media and Democrats who know how to work them. In a nutshell, we’re screwed.
But the notion that Republicans have leverage is silly. It’s the same kind of happy thinking that led some to boldly predict a Romney victory.
Look at it from Obama’s perspective. Would allowing the sequestration cuts to kick in be that bad? It would allow him to cut the U.S. military (and blame Republicans), make some much-needed spending cuts (without taking heat from his base), and — as a bonus – raise taxes!
To be sure, aside from the obvious national security implications, most experts predict that this would also have serious consequences for the economy.
Of course, it would presumably be better for Obama’s legacy if the economy were to improve during his second term. But he managed to get re-elected once despite failing to turn around the economy. And he doesn’t have to stand for re-election again.
Read the whole thing if you want to know just how screwed we are.
Sometimes I get the impression from people on our side that they expect these human beings to do super-human things. But they’re just people like the rest of us. It’s easy to say we would not do things their way from our living rooms and kitchen tables. But we don’t have the glare on us from an unfriendly media like they do. I’m happy they’ve held out as long as they have in these sham fiscal cliff negotiations. Instead of constantly knocking them down maybe we should just pray for them to have the strength to do the right thing.
Then again, maybe there’s an out for them that will totally tick everyone off, while getting them off the hook. But hey, what do I know?
Update: If you don’t get where I’m coming from, read this: It’s the Culture, Stupid

@lonelycon No Kidding. Why the powers that control it don’t see that being moderate GUARANTEES loss! I live in MN & we are so screwed…

Boehner could have gotten a better deal in 2011. Back then, the Dems really were proposing major spending cuts.
But Boehner couldn’t get his own base and the Tea Party Republicans to buy it. Their attitude was that the Dems will renege on spending cuts eventually anyway, so why bother making any deal at all.
Besides, the GOP was assuming that they could defeat Obama in 2012 anyway, and the new GOP President would help them get major spending cuts.
They assumed wrong.

Bush 1 began began the custom of “tax raises now,and spending cuts someday in the future”. Of course the “future” never happens. Can we ever forgive the “Republican Senate” under Bush when they couldn’t even pass drilling for oil, or reducing a nickel’s worth of spending. Now we should put our faith in this bunch of Bozos? Really, Charlie Brown, Lucy won’t pull up the ball this time.

Boehner could have gotten a better deal in 2011″ is kinda like saying Israel could have gotten a better deal with Arafat. The reality is that much of the culture, like Arabs to Jews, hates conservative principles and will never, ever deal. Their goal is to obliterate us, not “deal” with us. Three generations of people have grown up in this country without the first clue how to DO anything–they depend on computers or governments and can’t fathom life without those safety nets. Sorry to be a downer, but I think Obama has managed to ‘fundamentally transform the nation’ that was ripe for his message and we’re not going to get traditional America back. It is, truly, ‘the culture’ and we’ve waited too long to become alarmed.

Look at all the scandals both Clintons and their cabinet members were exposed to be involved in, many involving national security and human rights violations, and both were allowed to walk free and wreak more destruction upon the World yet again. The Destructive Party places ideology and money over Country and humanity time and time again. They have no conscience, faith, or fear.
Boehner proved to be worthless in his stint as replacement House Speaker back in 2006. Seniority House Representatives are RINOs targeting those who stand upon principles of a Constitutional America. They couldn’t even fight for the integrity of the vote directly after the 2008 election. The House of Representatives SHOULD control appropriations. Harry Reid has obstructed a BUDGET in favor of unlimited Continuing Resolutions. Barry has repeatedly bypassed the House using money however he wants. Fifteen months have passed since the last “emergency”. We already went over the manufactured cliff when debt exceeded 100% of GDP. I say let the government shut down and expose the fiasco attack on the productive to all. It should have been done 8/2011, long before election. We are going to be taxed another $494B in new ObamaTaxCare come 1/2013 anyway. Barry wants chaos as he has never supported the Rule of Law, unless it favored his position. Resources will be extracted from anything that maintains civility and given as trinkets to the unproductive and lawless. He will continue to abdicate American sovereignty to the United Nations.

Why is it totally inconceivable to so many that two parties could WORK TOGETHER to come up with solutions to our countries?
The clear cut message that this presidential election was not that the country wanted to elect Saint Obama but that electorate is sick of this divisiveness between Dems & Reps whether everything is either-or win-lose. We had that for four years and not a lot got accomplished and the country has serious problems to deal with.
But as long as Democrats shoot down any Republican initiative and the Republicans refuse to even consider President Obama’s proposals, things will just get worse & worse. This intractable bitterness and hatred has to stop, from both sides. THIS is what is destroying this country, not one man or one political party…it’s the total lack of respect that half of America has for the other half (and vice versa).
This focus on petty little matters (fought over for strategic reasons or to embarrass the other side) while there are serious issue involving education, the environment, the economy, our children’s future….this is what drive me crazy and causes me to lose hope. How about if it it isn’t MY vision or YOUR vision of America but OURS?
