New York Governor Andrew Cuomo isn’t the only blue state governor in the news this week, but his big gun grab may be overshadowing his counterpart in Massachusetts. Governor Deval Patrick is seeking a whopping $1 billion in tax and fee increases so he can increase spending.
According to Boston.com, Patrick listed possible revenue sources including:
- Raising the gas tax from 21 cents to 51 cents per gallon
- Raising the sales tax from 6.25 percent to 7.75 percent
- Raising the state income tax to 5.66 percent from 5.25 percent
- Levying a vehicle miles-traveled tax at 2.4 cents per mile
- New, emissions-based vehicle title and registration fees could raise $175 million
- A payroll tax on workers in regions with transit service could raise $140 million to $207 million

This is obviously an opener for a presidential bid by Deval to gain cred and “one up” Andy. Expect similar stuff from Cory Booker, Bloomie and maybe even Antonio Viliaraigosa. It’s a progressive competitive thing.

Will people, at some point, remember that politicians work for US, not the other way around? Will they at some point just say “no”? If a management team tried to run a business the way these folks do, they would be fired. The entire team. And quickly replaced with people who know how to turn a profit without running customers off with exorbitant prices. It’s really not more difficult than that, and I’m sick of politicians “suffering” me my rights. They’re arrogant and greedy and dishonest and I’m in a mood to fire them all and start over. The idea of secession is very attractive these days. Let’s go ahead and create two Americas and see which one thrives and which one rots.
