New York Assemblyman Felix Ortiz filed a bill on January 29, 2013 which would require all gun owners to obtain at least $1 million in liability insurance. It doesn’t look like there are cosponsors, but that’s hardly a comforting thought considering who controls things in Albany. This is in addition to the rotten gun control bill Governor Cuomo signed after it was rammed through the legislature.
What is Ortiz trying to do, make it impossible for poor New Yorkers to legally own firearms?
You can ask him, or someone on his staff, by calling 518-455-3821 LOB 826. His district office number is 718-492-6334 and OrtizF@assembly.state.ny.us is his email address.

There’s a reason why it has no co-sponsors, because it’s an extremist point of view. And any form of extremism is, left or right, should not be tolerated or taken seriously. This proposal will never see the light of day.
But I’m glad you posted this, because this is how we feel on the left when the NRA says they’re against background checks. That too is an extremist point of view and holds no credence in the real world.

funny how they get all these ideas from DailyKos and ThinkProgress and InTheseTimes and others – i keep seeing these ‘creative’ suggestions.
but more worried about DHS and others buying up billions of rounds. I suppose that is an executive order. It would be funny if they were giving out ammo to their pals.

More de facto gun control. The progressives are already thinking “single payer” on this.

I have 1 million dollars of liability insurance that covers my sporting activities as a member of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. Its part of my 30 dollar annual membership. If it does pass, it should cost next to nothing, given that legal gun owners are unlikely to ever need the insurance. I am sure that the NRA could include the insurance in membership dues and it would be easy, convenient and cost about 2$ a year.
I am not an American so take this for what its worth. In Canda we have a “posession and acquisition licence” . A two day training course and a back ground check and they give you a license. Any gun dealer looks at the card and that’s the back ground check. No need to do one each and every time you buy a gun and it even works at gun shows and private sales. Of course it doesn’t stop dishonest people, but nothing does.

What is Ortiz trying to do, make it impossible for poor New Yorkers to legally own firearms?… Yes. Banning firearms won’t fly; even the extreme Dems in my family own guns and they are rabidly irritated right now at the attempt to infringe on that right. What the Democrat party will do is require insurance, additional annual “fees”, taxes, etc… they won’t ban firearms, they will just make it impossible for law abiding citizens to AFFORD firearms. That’s been the plan for a lot of years and they are using Newtown to jumpstart that idea. Of course, persons of criminal intent won’t pay any of those things and own guns anyway. Just ask Toes in Chicago…. I also see that the ADL thinks there should be some sort of program for training in responsible gun ownership. Guess they totally missed the NRA, eh?? I’ve taken the concealed permit courses from an NRA certified instructor—they have the best program out there to teach you how NOT to have to use your weapon and how to keep it completely safe from children and etc (if it’s on your hip, you don’t have to worry about access, do you?).
