As if the cost of living isn’t bad enough in this rotten economy, the Obama administration has decided to send the price of fresh tomatoes skyrocketing. According to the Wall Street Journal, the administration has decided to take the side of Florida growers (no doubt Obama donors) who don’t want any competition from south of the border. Don’t get me wrong, whenever possible, I buy USA grown tomatoes, one of my younger son’s favorites. But if imports from Mexico are all that’s available that’s what I’ll buy. Either way, it’s going to be a lot more expensive.
The deal updates a 16-year-old agreement and raises prices on Mexican tomato imports “substantially, in some cases more than double,” as Commerce Under Secretary for International Trade Francisco Sánchez put it, approvingly. The Cato Institute’s Daniel Ikenson estimates that winter tomato prices could rise from 41% to 168%, and summer prices 47% to 176%. Specialty tomatoes, such as grape, cherry or heirloom varieties, will see the biggest increases.
So why would Mexico agree to this, given that its tomato industry employs some 350,000 in some of the poorest parts of the country, while generating $1.8 billion in trade in 2011? Answer: Mr. Sánchez used U.S. trade law as a cudgel.
Read the whole thing. Michelle Obama is all for our kids eating fresh fruits and vegetables every day, but her husband’s bureaucrats are making those fresh veggies harder to obtain for middle class and poor Americans living in northern states where we can’t grow our own in the winter.
Ah well, spring is just around the corner. Maybe we can make up for it using our government outlawed 100 watt incandescent light bulbs and some seeds.
Wait, what was that I said about the Hunger Games?

In the last two years, our town seems to have considerably lowered its costs associated with what used to be a vigorous tree trimming/removal program. Five years ago, when we had storms, we were without power for maybe a day, max. Now, our selectman, relies on FEMA funds, after the fact, and our power outages range from 6 to 8 days. Saved the town budget a pile of money in preventive maintenance. Soooo, most of us now have generators to weather the outages.
Guess now we will have to get little greenhouses…oh the glories of government imbecility.

My grandparents told me they had “victory gardens” at home during WWII. I’m following their lead and doing the same. We’re at war with progressives and they will do whatever it takes to gain control over us to the smallest degree. I just hope that somehow they’re stopped politically before tensions turn to the unpredictable, but in many ways I think that’s what the progressives wish for.

Food costs will soar this year; another part of the plan. They control our food/water/electricity/gasoline, they control us. I’ll be planting my Victory Garden (nod to Michigan) over Presidents Day weekend and if I’m successful, preserving whatever I can’t immediately eat. It already feels like we are heading into a Soviet lifestyle (nod to Marybel). I’m made fun of as a “Prepper”, but I hope to have my own food source and be able to laugh back.

Liberty,
You are so correct. I’d only add that I think there is so little and will be so little outcry about thaes rising prices because of so many receiving subsidies in the form od government subsidies, such as food stamps, EBT cards, etc. I know personally of a woman whose ex isn’t paying her enough alimony, so she has finagled herself a nice fat energy subsidy. She gets almost free heat and electricity courtesy of taxpayers. If she were truly needy, I wouldn’t have a beef, but this gal has a general lifestyle better than most I know. She used to hit up her brother when she ran short for essentials. He wised up and cut her off. Now we all get to subsidize her profligate ways. She must love her new sugar daddy, Obama.
I’m not giving her any of my homegrown tomatoes this year, that’s for sure.
