Pope Benedict XVI announced that he will resign at the end of the month, taking the world by surprise. In the resignation letter written to the Vativan, the Pope cited his age and failing health. “After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. ”

Update: A conclave to elect a new Pope will take place some time in March.
When Pope Benedict resigns on 28 February he will leave the office vacant and the process to choose a new leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics will begin.
Without the customary mourning period that follows the death of a pontiff, a meeting of the cardinals to elect his successor, called a conclave, could begin by mid-March. (Read More)

It’s to be seen if this is good or bad for freedom. The Pope has been battling leftist forces from within for years. He’s had to endure disloyal acts and rumors that there have been attempts on his life from within to where he’s had a food taster for safety. Over the years he’s tried to somewhat stack the deck of Cardinals that will choose his successor. He’s a very smart, methodical man and this may have been the time of his choosing to utilize a winning tactic that no one saw coming.

I trust in our Holy Father’s wisdom, prudence, intelligence, love for holy Mother Church and her children. I also respect and admire his abilities as a tactician. We are in good hands no matter what.
