We could spend days going through the federal budget finding things to cut that the public would never even notice. Wine conferences, presidential golf outings, new TSA uniforms, and oil portraits of unelected bureaucrats are just a few that we’ve covered in the past few days. Now there’s this – the White House calligraphy staff costs the taxpayers almost $300,000 per year.
With the White House closing its doors to public tour groups in order to save money for the sequester, it’s worth remembering some of the other costs the White House incurs annually.
Like the “Chief Calligrapher,” Patricia A. Blair, who has an annual salary of $96,725, and her two deputies, Debra S. Brown, who gets paid $85,953 per year, and Richard T. Muffler, who gets paid $94,372 every year. (Read More)
Unfortunately, we’re just getting started talking about what the government can cut. But Obama isn’t interested in any of that, all he’s thinking about is returning the Speaker’s gavel back to Nancy Pelosi so he can complete the fundamental transformation of the United States of America.

I was looking at this very document last week and I found that I was less offended by the amount paid to the calligraphy staff than by the nearly $700k that was paid to “analysts”. You can kind of guess that a calligrapher would actually produce something that someone would use, but an analyst? They could be doing anything or nothing.
That spreadsheet, btw, is a very interesting document. It includes 300+ staffers, costing the taxpayers over $37MM/year, and does not include people like the $100k+ dog trainer, the personal trainer they fly in, masseuse/masseur/whatever, and all of the other people employed to keep President Obama living the 1%-er high life. Also, keep in mind that the numbers from that spreadsheet are from 2012. I’m sure the total is much bigger this year.
