As much as I like Aaron Clarey’s blog Captain Capitalism, I must take issue with his post “Most Small Business Owners Are Dumb As Hell.” First of all, I would ask that if his blog is a small business, does that mean that he is as dumb as hell? Second, I take issue with his characterization of contractors.
Finally, a disproportionate number of “small businesses” are really just contractors who claim theyr’e running a business. You know, the guy with the truck who bought a magnet to put on it “Joe’s Master Paving” but couldn’t tell you what “LLC” stands for or where the secretary of state is to register such a thing. They are basically playing make-believe-businessman. They get cards, they get signs, they get everything that is glamorous and ritzy, but not the basic things like setting up a company or getting insurance.
In all fairness to Aaron, he is right in a way. My husband’s business, which is an insured limited liability corporation with your’s truly as the office manager, often has to compete with these fly-by-night contractors who depress labor rates and make it hard to make a living. But to lump us all in with the frauds is beyond insulting.
Oh, and Aaron, if you want to see what hard work looks like, fly out to upstate New York and hang out with my husband – the dumb as hell small business owner – for a day or two. Climb up onto some roofs with him, remove some yucky old toilets, and then rebuild everything according to the architect’s plans. I don’t know another human being that works as hard as that guy does.
Heaven forbid he sees a post telling him how dumb he is, while his back hurts, and his arms hurt, and he leaves home on a Sunday to see a client. He might actually agree. Then what?
Update: I almost forgot to mention how our small business has been trying to hire a qualified employee for over a year. Nobody out there is qualified. They’re all racking up student loan debt so they can be turned down for jobs by big business. So who is dumb again?
