Ole Kentucky Mitch must be feeling VERY comfortable and safe in his election year Senate seat. This tired windbag glommed on to the Rand Paul filibuster when he saw it get attention but because the fight against Obamacare isn’t as sexy he could care less. After all, it’s just us simpleton Americans who are gonna be hurt by it. The Congress is exempted and the rich won’t be part of it and the ruling class will get all their perks so Mitch says we call all go screw ourselves, he’s not in the mood to be fighting for America.
Mitch thinks we are all dopes and can’t understand what he’s really doing
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell will not join an effort in the Senate to block a House-passed spending bill that defunds Obamacare, a spokesman for McConnell said Monday.
“Sen. McConnell supports the House Republicans’ bill and will not vote to block it, since it defunds Obamacare and funds the government without increasing spending by a penny. He will also vote against any amendment that attempts to add Obamacare funding back into the House Republicans’ bill,” said Don Stewart, a spokesman for the Republican senator.
Gee, that sounds like Mitch is on the right side and that Cruz is trying to block the House bill we all cheered for. Mitch doesn’t know that we simpleton Americans actually can figure out the non-intuitive procedural minutia of the Senate.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid needs the support of 6 Republican Senators to defeat any filibuster undertaken by Sens. Cruz and Lee, assuming he has the votes of his entire caucus. The decision by McConnell and Cornyn to vote against a filibuster ensures that Reid will have the Republican votes he needs to move forward with the bill.
The expectation is then that, after a period of debate on the CR, Sen. Reid will file another cloture motion to cut off debate and proceed to amendments. By holding a cloture vote before amendments are considered, Reid will be able to add amendments to the bill by a simply majority vote. He will likely block any Republican amendments and off language to restore ObamaCare funding. The final resolution could then pass the Senate by a simply majority.
So in reality, Mitch and Cornyn are default Democrat votes against defunding.
