Michelle Obama’s 50th birthday bash was over the weekend. Although the invitations left some etiquette experts scratching their heads over the instruction to eat first, it must have been a pretty lavish affair. According to the Washington Examiner there were about 500 guests, a real who’s who of Washington, DC and Hollywood. Beyonce was the starring act, and may have one of the only pictures of the night, a snapshot taken on her way into the White House. From there guests were forced to leave their cell phones at the door, lest any of them felt the urge to share photos on social media. So, why the secrecy?
Why the secrecy, especially for an event involving so many well-known people? Maybe the Obamas just wanted a little privacy for an important occasion in the first lady’s life, although having 500 guests, including some of the most famous people on the planet, is perhaps not the best way to achieve that goal. Or maybe, since the president has announced he is devoting the rest of his time in office to an “inequality agenda,” the White House felt photos of a champagne-soaked, star-studded party would be somewhat off-message.
