Alex Sink is the Democrats’ candidate in the special election to replace the late Rep. Bill young. She participated in a debate with Republican David Jolly and Libertarian Lucas Overby. Sink raised some eyebrows when the topic of immigration came up.
Asked by moderator Dr. Susan MacManus for her thoughts on the issue of immigration reform, Sink replied that the issue was a very important agenda to the beaches’ chambers of commerce “because we have a lot of employers that rely upon workers … to clean our hotel rooms or do our landscaping.”
Cleaning hotel rooms. Landscaping? That’s what Alex Sink thinks immigrant workers are good for?
Suggesting that employers need immigrant workers to serve as maids and mowers is about the worst type of stereotyping in which someone can engage. (Read More)
Even if she’s right, and they need immigrants to mow lawns and clean hotels, we have to ask why. Millions of Americans have left the labor market, and millions more are unemployed. Is there some reason Americans can’t be mowing lawns and cleaning hotels?
